The 1900s (Cultural History of the United States Through the Decades)
Published in Library Binding by Lucent Books (January, 1999)
Author: Adam Woog
Average review score:

The 1900's as the decade of Theodore Roosevelt
Some school have add to traditional division between World and U.S. history a course focusing on the Twentieth Century. This move has been justified not only because the United States dominated the last century, making it impossible to deal with World History without taking into consideration America's role, but also because so much happened in the last hundred years matters very much to the lives and future of our students. Consequently, a series looking at American history decade by decade through the last century can have great value to students and teachers alike.

Adam Woog, whose mother once slept under wool blankets taken by Robert Peary to the North Pole in 1909, has the writing honors for the first decade of the 20th century. "The 1900s" is divided into seven chapters: (1) Daily Life: In the Good Old Summertime; (2) Social Problems, Social Cures: The Birth of the Square Deal; (3) Big Business, Labor, and Trust Busting: An Era of Reform; (4) Saving the Wilderness and Settling the Land; (5) Transportation Transformed: The Automobile Age Begins; (6) America Abroad: Speaking Softly and Carrying a Big Stick; and (7) Summary: The Decade Ends. It becomes clear from Woog's book that this decade was the era of Theodore Roosevelt, who becomes President in 1901 when McKinley is assassinated and who is replaced in 1909 by his handpicked successor, Taft. Most of these chapters show the impact of TR's political philosophy and dominating personality on virtually every aspect of the nation's life.

The name of this series as "A Cultural History of the United States" is somewhat misleading, because although these volumes certainly emphasize cultural aspects of history such as literature, sports and entertainment more than that traditional history textbooks, they certainly do not emphasize American culture. These books cover technology, significant political and social events, trends and music. Sidebars offer details on everything from Theodore Roosevelt and the rise of advertising to the search for the North Pole and the San Francisco earthquake. Illustrations consist of not only photographs from the period but editorial cartoons, which I always like to see in a history text. While I imagine it might be impractical to have a classroom set of this entire series for each student, these books can certainly be used by teachers to supplement the basic material in the textbook or by students looking at this particular decade in some detail.

2,200 Quotations: From the Writings of Charles H. Spurgeon: Arranged Topically or Textually and Indexed by Subject, Scripture, and People
Published in Paperback by Baker Book House (January, 1996)
Authors: Tom Carter, Jay E. Adams, and Charles Haddon Spurgeon

Quotes to memorize for everyday use
The many quotes that were arranged and can be found in this book are excellent for use in your daily walk and for much instruction in the Lord. I found these to be quite useful in understanding certain topics found in the Bible, and sometimes found Spurgeon's quotes to be quite humorous. If there is any quotation book to get, this is a must have!

33 Snowfish
Published in School & Library Binding by Candlewick Press (March, 2003)
Authors: Adam Rapp and Timothy B. Ering
Average review score:

Beautiful, Chilling Story
This dark and poignant tale tells a very important story. he story chronicles the journey of 3 troubled and homeless kids. The story switches point of views from Curl a 15 year old prostitute to Custis a homeless boy who has escaped from his abusive "owner." The leader of this crew is Boobie who has just killed his parents and kidnapped his baby brother. This book deals with very difficult but important issues, and Rapp weaves tthe story beautifully. The slang is a bit difficult to understand in the beginning but once you become used to it, it adds a whole new element to the story. The story is distrubing and not easily forgotten but it is meant to stay with the reader. This haunting book is not one you will regret reading.

57 Great Math Stories and the Problems They Present
Published in Paperback by Instructional Fair (January, 1998)
Authors: Debbie Haver, Alice Koziol, Elain Haven, Dan Mulligan, Adam Rodriguez, and Warner McGee
Average review score:

Real World Math for Kids!
I purchased this book for my 10 year old to work on during summer vacation. Delaware is deep into education standards, writing and problem solving. This book touches it all! The "word problems" are great short stories and deal with topics children are familiar with. The questions after each story challenge children in reading comprehension as well as math skills. I would recommend this book for teachers as well as parents for enrichment purposes.

I HATE WELFORD AND THIS BOOK!
Let me tell you something...there are NO SUCH THINGS as optical aberrations. They are a figment of this Welford's imagination! He made them up, and somehow convinced the world that they are a serious concern in imaging systems. All I know is, if I see Welford, I'm going to let him have it!

Studies Mrs. Adams' letters as literature
Abigail Adams: A Writing Life by Edith B. Gelles (Senior Scholar, Institute for Research on Women and Gender, Stanford University) is a careful, articulate, scholarly analysis of the literary and historical work of Abigail Adams, the wife of John Adams and mother of John Quincy Adams. Half biography, half literary criticism, Abigail Adams: A Writing Life studies Mrs. Adams' letters as literature and looks at her correspondence in-depth. A marvelous portrayal of a unique woman in America's history, Abigail Adams: A Writing Life is highly recommended for Women's Studies and American Literary Studies supplemental reading lists and academic reference collections.
